WRAP WEEK ENDING 13 AUGUST

What a week it was for the Bay.

Following the successful day against Helderberg where radio stations KFM & Cape Talk set up an enormous marquee and there was a wonderful vibe at the club in superb winter sunshine, the Bay teams continued their march.

Anyone who read the Weekend Argus’ report on the First XV game may feel aggrieved at the seemingly disparaging description of the Bay’s performance. “A plucky False Bay” was the way the Bay was described.

Was it a plucky False Bay Third XV who outscored the home Maties team 4 tries to 2 in their 24-12 win? At Coetzenburg!

Was it a plucky False Bay Second XV who beat Maties Seconds 26-17 (4 tries to 1) at Coetzenburg?

The First XV was far from plucky. The half time score was 11-14. With three minutes to go, a Bay try was disallowed because of apparent obstruction, which would have taken the score to 28-25. After 45 minutes of actual playing time (injury time watch stopped), the Maties scored a try to make the final tally a respectable 33-18 for them, but a scoreline which gave no indication of the guts, polish and desire with which the Bay acquitted themselves.

Perhaps plucky would have described the False Bay Under 20A team in their 44-9 loss to Maties. Plucky would not enter any sentence describing their performance on Wednesday night at UCT, the second of their three big games in 7 days, where they were most unfortunate to come away with nothing but heartache.

Indefatigable, dogged, relentless, but a few words to describe the FIFO’s. Plucky? Definitely not. They kept at their task throughout the season despite some setbacks and with a fine, calculated display on Wednesday night, qualified for the quarter-finals on Friday night coming.

Plucky, yes they’re plucky, but that may be an understatement when describing the False Bay Fifths. Drained weekly of their talent moving to higher teams, this group of players have done exceptionally well throughout the season and wrapped up their abbreviated competition with a fine win against UCT on Wednesday night.

Plucky is not a word we at False Bay appreciate being used as a description of ANY of our teams. We’ll allow it on occasion, but only when circumstance dictates.

False Bay RFC teams, from top to bottom, are not plucky, nor courageous, spirited, brave, daring, bold, game, hardy, heroic, gritty, feisty, gutsy, intrepid, valiant, daughty, undaunted, unflinching, spunky, ballsy and mettlesome. We are a club who love our rugby, play hard and competitively and to win and enjoy the friendship the game creates off the pitch.

Herewith a wrap. The writer was not at Stellenbosch. Match wraps/descriptions to follow.

FRIDAY NIGHT

FALSE BAY 5ths                  10

UCT                                        5

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

UCT A                                    23

FALSE BAY U20A                15

Once again the U-20A team punched way above their weight with the players all playing to their full potential. False Bay dominated many phases of play but their skill levels did not completely match UCT’s and they squandered two try-scoring opportunities through poor handling. The young Ikeys scored early in the contest but as soon as the Bay realised that they were showing their opponents an inordinate amount of respect and that at worst they could match them, the Bay started to dominate.

The Bay hero of the evening has to be Adri Claasen who put over 5 penalties of which two were from 45m. Clearly a team performance, with everyone doing their bit, but stand out players amongst a standout squad were Claasen and loosehead prop, Niko Vetsos whose exceptional workrate gave the effect of a fourth loose forward.

The Bay overshadowed their opponents in the second half and it was only a late score which sealed the victory for the home side. False Bay can feel cheated at having come away from a match against a start studded team, which they could so easily have won, without any league points.

A measure of the respect False Bay earned from UCT, the hosts formed a tunnel and applauded their opponents from the pitch.

(Thanks Kallie).

UCT B                                    58

FALSE BAY U20B                6

FALSE BAY FIFOs               38

NNK                                       10

Playing their last league match before the quarter finals against bottom of the log NNK was never going to be easy for the Bay. They have shown steady improvement throughout the season, through focus and goalsetting.

The FIFOs had won their previous four matches and a victory at Parow would give them at keast one more match for the season, as they then earned the right to compete in the playoffs.

An inauspicious start saw them go 0-10 within as many minutes, but maturity and level heads settled the team down and they set about shutting the home side out of the contest.

A squad built on mutual friendship and respect, with a few strong characters to help them through the testing time, the FIFOs showed the determination, polish and focus to score six unanswered tries to take the game 38-10. One such player was Marc Douglass, who has filled in at all positions in the pack with the exception of second row, and who excelled at loosehead prop through executing the basics of his role properly and then delivering the extras after that.

Tries: Daniel Couldridge, William Solomon, Matt Thompson, Heath Wrigley and David Brunette (2)

Conversions: Ashley Hobbs(2) Jonathan Thomas (2)

False Bay FIFOs play the Wolf Pack at Gardens Tech grounds in Oranjezicht of Friday night.
