INVOLVING A BROADER BASE
This week coach Kevin Musikanth felt it was pertinent to give recognition to those supporters whohave shown outstanding support for the team over the last two or three years.
A number of supporters were given the opportunity to each present a jersey to a first team squad member.
It was a moving and enjoyable evening.
Anton Schelhase shares his thoughts.
Jon
I wanted to thank you for the invitation to the jersey handover last Friday. Being a recent arrival at the club (only 3 years) by comparison to the other invitees, I was unsure of what the atmosphere would be like. In particular, I was unsure whether the players were being forced to put up with listening to annoying platitudes from a bunch of decrepit old men or whether they were eager to be there. Hence, like the lawyer I am, I stayed silent and watched. Having spent three years attending games; I think it is fair to say that I should have known a lot better!
From the first time I came to the club I was struck by how friendly it is and what a remarkable family environment (leaving aside some of the visiting spectators from the second league sides!)it is. The players have always been a warm, friendly and boisterous bunch of young men who show discipline both on and off the field. I saw that they were genuinely enthused by meeting the supporters and the evening was a wonderful occasion which I enjoyed immensely. It was also brilliant to finally meet and put names to a number of faces who I saw every game but who I had never before actually spoken to. I suppose that is Cape Town for you...
The next day at Hammies was therefore, even more enjoyable as I chatted to some of the guys I had met the previous night. The team of course, on the day, were magnificent in their refusal to give in and by the end the grudging admiration for them from the Hammies fans around us was testament to the character they displayed. We all thought we were going to win! Whilst that did not happen, it was an enthralling game and epitomised why I chose to watch that rather than WP.
Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to seeing you at the club.
Cheers
